Who are we at birth?

I was thinking about my children the other day and who they are. Their essence hasn’t changed from when we first brought them home. When my daughter was about 6 months old, she would practice bringing her hands together while lying on her baby blanket over and over again. She practiced her walking along the couch until she was confident enough to take her first tentative steps. Anything she attacks, she does with vengeance and practice. Today, she studies really hard, this being a form of practice, becoming successful with all her efforts.
My son, from the time he was able to hold his head up, would just follow with his eyes what people were doing, soaking it all in. He didn’t practice walking, he watched what we were all doing, and one day he stood up and started pushing his toy lawnmower. He didn’t speak much, and then one day, he started talking in full sentences. Learning to ride a bike was pretty much the same. He watched and took it all in, and then started riding. Today, he is much the same way, reading about what he is interested in and becoming successful with his endeavors.
As we get older, we tend to forget who we really are. Trying to fit into society’s version of what we are suppose to be as we grow up, helps contribute to this distortion of who we think we are. Looking into the mirror everyday doesn’t really help. Our essence is really who we are when we are born. Some of us may forget and get lost along the way, but if we think back, who are we really? Reflecting how we became successful with what ever we put our minds to; sports, jobs, hobbies may help us get back to who we lost touch with. Our true selves.
